Context

Toast is a restaurant technology platform used by over 140,000 restaurant owners across the U.S. to manage orders and payments. I led design for Scan to Pay, a guest payment product that lets diners pay their check directly from their phone.

What is Scan to Pay?

Scan to Pay is an iOS-only App Clip product that lets restaurant guests pay their bills by scanning a QR code without having to wait for staff or hand over a card.

Problem:
Built for 1 person to pay one bill

Scan to Pay was built for one person to pay one bill. For groups, that meant someone had to cover the whole table and chase down Venmo requests, or guests had to line up and pay one by one.

Challenge:
Add group checkout to
Scan to Pay

Design a seamless
group payment experience

Goal & OKRs

📈

Higher checkout completion for orders for groups

Time to completion

💰

Increase in restaurant revenue

Design principles

1

No social awkwardness. People shouldn’t coordinate how to split

2

No manual math work regardless of how the groups split

3

But synchronized. Feel connected to the same check

Solution

Step 1

Update receipt copy to "Scan to Split or Pay"

Sets the right expectation before the guest even opens their phone

Copy updated →

Step 2

Discover "Split bills"

Guests decides whether to "Split" or "Pay in full" after reviewing the total

Step 3

Split by items

Guests see the full list of items on the check and select what they ordered to pay

Step 3

Splitting evenly

Guests set the number of people splitting the bill using the plus and minus stepper and choose how many people they are covering.

Step 4

Confirmation & Reassurance

Reassures the guest that they are all set, shows the remaining group balance so they know others still need to pay, surfaces the QR code to share with the rest of the table

Impact

After GA in September 2023, we tracked results through February 2024. The customer reception to our sweeping changes was positive. While it took customers some time to become familiar with the new experience, we've hit our business goals.
